Gemstone and Jewelry Care
Professional cleanings are recommended as frequently as once a year depending on how often you wear your jewelry. Between cleanings, most jewelry can be maintained with non-abrasive cleaner or with warm soapy water and a soft, lint-free cloth. Ultrasonic cleaning is not safe for many gemstones, therefore we advise against this method.
Effy polishes all sterling silver jewelry with a rhodium finish that protects it from tarnishing rapidly. Sterling silver will tarnish quickly when exposed to salt air and products containing sulfur.
To remove tarnish, we recommend using a non-abrasive silver polish. For a quick polish, a soft silver polishing cloth could be used. A polishing cloth is best specifically for sterling silver designs that have delicate or fine details, as polish is hard to remove from small surfaces and deep grooves.
To keep gold jewelry looking new, examine it regularly to make sure the settings are snug and the clasps are secure. Polishing with a soft cloth after each use and storing it in a protected place will ensure longevity. Exposure to harsh chemicals such as household bleach will cause gold to discolor and disintegrate.
Every gemstone requires special care. We recommend avoiding contact with abrasive and hard surfaces, extreme temperatures, cosmetics, household chemicals, and perfumes.
Diamond Care: Use a mild solution of six parts water to one part ammonia and gently apply with a very soft bristle brush. Run the diamond under clean water and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaning are only recommended when being performed by a professional.
Pearl Care: Strands should be professionally cleaned and restrung if worn regularly. Between professional cleanings polish the outside of the pearl with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaning. Avoid extreme temperatures, cosmetics, household chemicals and perfumes.
Emerald and Turquoise Care: Use warm soapy water only and a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaning. Avoid extreme temperatures, cosmetics, household chemicals and perfumes.
Ruby Care: Use warm soapy water and a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid strong detergents and scrubbing on oiled stones.
